TREATMENTS

Improve your life with therapy

Clinical Psychology & Counselling

We approach therapy from a sex-positive, open-minded, inclusive, and non-judgemental perspective, with a stocked toolbox to help you identify and work towards your goals. We know jargon makes talking intimidating, so here’s what you can expect from us in layman’s terms:

Specialized treatment for sexual concerns

Many psychologists and counsellors will specialize in a specific concern. Our psychologists and associate therapists have all completed additional specialized training in sex therapy—however, not all sex therapy looks the same. Sex therapists can vary quite a bit in how they conduct sex therapy based on the kind of approaches they were trained to do.

A toolbox of therapies

We believe in evidence-based therapies. This largely means practical and solution-focused therapies, like cognitive-behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. If this sounds like mumbo-jumbo, just know that you are central to your treatment—our job is to understand your goals and create an individualized treatment plan to reach them, providing you with the knowledge, tools, and guidance you need.

Individualized to your needs

In a very practical sense, you can expect an in-depth assessment at the start of our work together so that we can get to know you (and your partner, if applicable), your goals, and the factors at play that have been making it difficult for you to reach your goals. We’ll provide you with an individualized treatment plan and recommendations, unique to you and your goals. Oftentimes, we will suggest very specific sex therapy techniques for you to try out at home, as well as more general therapy techniques that can be helpful in reaching your sexual goals. Treatment is always collaborative, so we will constantly check in with you to ensure you feel the treatment is working for you.

Support for other, related concerns

Clinical psychologists and counsellors are trained to help people with a range of problems, including anxiety, mood, and behavioural problems. In addition to having completed specific training in sex therapy, all of our therapists at the West Coast Centre for Sex Therapy have the foundational training and experience to help people with these more general problems. Specifically, we are happy to assist with the following concerns that can impact sexual satisfaction and overall quality of life:

  • Relationship distress/discord
  • Discernment counselling/Clarity coaching
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Body image concerns
  • Low self-esteem
  • Perfectionism
  • Dealing with major life stressors
  • Grief
  • Trauma
  • Psychosis
  • Emotional dysregulation (including borderline personality disorder)
